A woman was struck over the head, dragged into nearby bushes and raped by an unknown man, Morgan Hill police reported Friday.

The woman told officers she was walking in the area of Monterey Road and Old Monterey Road in north Morgan Hill about 7 p.m. April 28, when an unknown man approached her from behind, pushed her to the ground and stuck her with an unknown object before raping her, according to a press release.

The man then fled on foot toward Cochrane Road. The woman called 911 from a passerby’s cell phone.

She described the man as white, 5-feet, 9-inches to 6-feet tall, with a scruffy beard. He had short sandy-brown hair and a thin face. His eye sockets were recessed and his eyes were either dark blue or green. He wore blue jeans and a gray, hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head.

The rape is the first reported sexual assault in the area since mid-January, when an 18-year-old woman was pulled out of her idling car near a north Gilroy intersection and raped, according to Gilroy police.

There were seven reports of sexual assault by strangers in Gilroy in 2007. However, one of those reports were recanted and another was possibly not an attack as the victim was unsure if she was attacked because she was slipping in and out of consciousness.

Descriptions of the attackers in the sexual assaults vary widely.

Anyone with information can call Morgan Hill police at 779-2101 or the Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers tip line at 947-7867.
