San Martin Avenue at Monterey Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, April 21 through Wednesday, April 23 as the Valley Transportation Authority continues to improve vehicle and pedestrian access to the San Martin Caltrain Station.
The project, expected to be completed next month, will increase parking capacity by 161 spots, and improve pedestrian and parking access by easing congestion along San Martin Avenue. The improvements are being made to accommodate the needs of commuters traveling between Gilroy and San Jose in South Santa Clara County.
All traffic will be detoured around construction. Pedestrian access to the train station will be maintained during commute hours.
The $1 million project was funded by the 1996 Measure B Transportation Improvement Program.
The proposed improvements will:
-Provide 161 new parking spaces in VTA owned property east of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks along Depot Street.
-Widen San Martin Avenue, between Monterey Road and Depot Road (including dedicated left and right turn lanes from San Martin Avenue to Monterey Road)
-Provide improved pedestrian access between the Caltrain Station and the new parking across the Union Pacific Railway tracks.
-Improve the grade differential between Monterey Road and the railroad tracks
-Provide an acceleration and deceleration lane along Monterey Road.
-Improve drainage in the general area between Monterey Road and Depot Road along San Martin Avenue.
