El Teatro Campesino has announced a second four-week extension of “Zoot Suit”, the critically acclaimed play by Luis Valdez.

Almost twenty-five years after the original production, “Zoot Suit” has once again proven that it’s still a hit. Tickets for the premiere production of “Zoot Suit” had already sold out before it opened back in 1978, and since then it has drawn audiences to the box office whenever it’s been produced.

Drawn from actual transcripts, documents and newspaper articles of the 1940s, “Zoot Suit” recreates historical events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder case that railroaded young Chicano pachucos, or zoot suiters, who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Playwright Luis Valdez masterfully synthesizes fact and fiction using the case to examine Chicano zoot suit culture, prejudice and the role of the media in the judicial system. Pulsing with the beat of 40s big band music and traditional Latin songs, “Zoot Suit” sizzles with dramatic intensity and stunning theatricalism.

Extended performances of “Zoot Suit” begin Jan. 12 and run until Feb. 9.

Ticket prices for performances on Thursdays range from $8 to $12. Tickets prices for Friday through Sunday range from $12 to $20. Performance times are at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. There will be two matinees, one at 2 p.m. Saturdays and the other at 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are now on sale.

El Teatro Campesino playhouse is located at 705 4th St. in San Juan Bautista.

The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For tickets call (831) 623-2512.
