Gilroy – Marina High School met its match on Saturday as Anchorpoint Christian football defended home field and defeated the visitors 44-8.

“We did good,” coach K.C. Adams said. “We finally played some team that was just as talented as us. And they were big and fast, boy. They kind of scared us coming in, because we have 18 kids and they got like 30-something.”

The Warriors weren’t intimidated for long though, taking a 14-0 lead into halftime despite sloppy conditions from rain the night before and the day of the game

Adams credited line coach Darius Johnson with helping the players step up to the challenge.

“Our line was better coached, because that was the difference in the whole game,” Adams said. “There was one time in the game where we had this drive in the third quarter and it was deep (in our territory) and (our linemen) just blew them out. (Coach Johnson) brought this Texas-linemen mentality to these kids”

Standouts in the game included quarterback Colton Minyard, who played in place of an injured Adrian Rodriguez, and receiver Ryan Lasondak. The pair hooked up on several long touchdown receptions, including both scores in the first half.

“(Colton) hadn’t taken many snaps, but man, you talk about having the game of your life,” Adams said.

The team improved to 3-0 (2-0 in the Coastal Athletic League) with the victory, and now must start preparing to host Riverdale Christian, a team that Adams thinks could provide the toughest test this season.

“Now we play a real good team Saturday,” he said. “They’ve been playing 8-man (football) for a while.”

The game will begin at 1pm.
