It started out innocently enough.
In the first inning of the Gavilan softball team’s game at Mission Thursday, the Rams loaded the bases but couldn’t push across a run.
Then all they did in the next four innings was push across 29.
“Holy moley … that’s a lot of runs,” said an almost-disbelieving Gav head coach Tim Kenworthy after his team’s 29-0 win in Santa Clara. “We ran out of little boxes in the scorebook.
“I’ve never seen anything like that in junior college softball.”
Against a Mission team starting back its program after a brief hiatus, the Rams (4-3/1-1) pounded 17 hits and tallied 41 total bases in a game that lasted just five innings due to the mercy rule.
In the second, Gavilan sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs. In the next inning, the Rams outdid themselves – crossing the plate 16 times while sending 22 batters up to bat.
For the game, Gilroy High graduate Vicky Velasquez went 3-for-3 with six RBI and six total bases. Former Live Oak player Amanda Jackson scored five times, while also recording six total bases.
Her old Acorn teammate, Megan Smart, went 4-for-4 with four runs scored.
The Rams look to continue their hot start with a trip to this weekend’s College of Sequoias Tournament in Visalia. Gavilan will play five games over two days, starting with tomorrow’s 10am contest with Porterville.
