6-year-old Gilroy girl suffers major injuries in single-car rollover

A 6-year-old girl from Gilroy suffered major injuries in a high-speed collision that occurred around 3:50 p.m. Thursday on southbound U.S. 101 just north of Luchessa Avenue, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities say a brown Chevy Blazer driven by a 57-year-old female from Gilroy was traveling south on U.S. 101 at 60 miles per hour when, “for an unknown reason still being investigated, the driver made an unsafe turning movement causing the vehicle to lose control.” The Blazer then rolled over multiple times in the center median until it came to a rest on its roof.
The 6-year-old passenger suffered a laceration to her right wrist and blunt force trauma to her head. She was transported by a Cal Star air ambulance to Valley Medical Center. The driver complained of pain to her neck as a result of the collision and was taken by ambulance to Regional Medical Center.
Both occupants were conscious and responsive when CHP and emergency personnel arrived.
CHP shut down U.S. 101 for approximately five minutes to allow Cal Star to land and pick up the injured girl.
