Gilroy – Traffic cones and fresh piles of dirt will remain fixtures along south Monterey Road for several months as work crews remain focused on building the city’s new sports complex, according to a local parks official.

Through most of fall and winter orange cones have lined the median on Monterey Road, just south of the intersection with Luchessa Avenue. A lone workman picked at the exposed dirt in the median Tuesday as traffic passed by.

Residents should expect more of the same for months to come, according to Parks and Facilities Manager Bill Headley, who said Don Chapin construction company is focused on completing the first phase of the sports park in the fields to the west.

Headley explained that work crews had to tear up the median early on in the project to connect water mains and other utilities that will service the park. He predicted that crews would finish median work by August.

“As time and weather permits they’re progressing on it,” he said.

When complete, the median will include landscaping and the road will include turning lanes into the park. The intersection will also be fully prepared for a future traffic signal.

Construction of the $10.7-million sports park began last March. The first of nine phases of the project are expected to last through July 2006 and will include the installation of three baseball diamonds, a soccer/football field, and playground areas.
