Gilroy – Young violinists in Gilroy are preparing for a summer tour with Mayor Al Pinheiro to Gilroy’s newest Sister City, Angra Do Heroísmo, Azores, Portugal.

To help raise money for the trip, the South Valley Suzuki Music Foundation (SVSMF) is holding ‘A Night In The Azores,’ a dinner and live auction Saturday from 6 to 10pm at the IFDES Lodge, 250 Old Gilroy St.

Dinner and auction tickets are $25 per person. Auction items up for bid will include a ‘Monterey Getaway’ package, a VIP wine-tasting tour, an Oregon resort package and more.

Proceeds will benefit the SVSMF tour to Angra Do Heroísmo.

Library helps prepare for April 15

Gilroy – The library has free resources to help taxpayers get their paperwork in order for the April 17 filing deadline.

A wide variety of how-to books on tax preparation and financial planning strategies are available along with state and federal tax forms. The Electronic Library 24/7 provides quick links to Web sites with online tax code, rates, forms and information for both the Internal Revenue Service and the Franchise Tax Board.

Craft sharing at the Gilroy Library

Gilroy – Have a craft project gathering dust? Need some extra motivation getting started on a new craft? Two additional dates have been set for the popular Craft Sharing program at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St. Drop-in today, or April 12, from 6:30 to 9pm.

Bring craft tools and supplies. Meet other crafty people; swap supplies and expertise. Ages teen through adult only. Gilroy crafter Cindy Boden will offer her guidance.

Gavilan presents ‘Blood Wedding’

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Theatre Arts’ department will perform “Blood Wedding” Friday, March 31 and April 1, 6, 7 and 8. All performances begin at 8pm in the college theater at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

The play is set in Madrid, Spain circa 1933 and based on a true story of love, lust and betrayal. Lorca wrote “Blood Wedding” years after reading a newspaper account of a young bride in Andalusia who abandoned her husband-to-be on their wedding day to escape with her childhood sweetheart.

General admission is $12, $8 for children and seniors and $10 for students.

Advance Health Care workshop

Gilroy – On Saturday, there will be a free Advance Health Care Directive workshop at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St., from 11am to 12:30pm. The workshop will include information on both parts of an accepted California Directive: Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare (Appointing an Agent) and a Living Will (health care instructions).

During the workshop, participants will fill out a form and go home with at least a rough draft of a completed and legal Directive. If you’ve been thinking about these things and feel like you’re ready to have your Directive witnessed, you’ll be able to have it notarized (also free) at the end of the workshop. Workshop hosted by Bonnie Evans (Coda certified to teach Advance Directive workshops and a California licensed Notary.)

South Valley Symphony Concert

San Juan Bautista – The South Valley Symphony will perform a concert at historic San Juan Bautista Mission on Saturday, April 8, at 8pm.

Maestro Henry Mollicone will lead the orchestra in a program of old and new selections of the classical music repertoire. The concert will lead off with Symphony in C Major by the French Compose George Bizet. Following a brief intermission, the orchestra will perform the St. Paul’s Suite by Gustav Holst.

Guest saxophone soloist William Trimble will appear in a performance of the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra by Marcello and conclude the program with the Choral Varie D’Indy.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 55 and older and $8 for students age 12 to 18. Tickets available at Porcella’s, 7357 Monterey St., Estate Furniture Gallery, 7565 Monterey St. and Carole’s Hallmark Shop, 779 First St.

Supe’s support $600 million bond

San Jose – Santa Clara County Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to support Proposition 81, a $600 million state bond to fund library construction projects. Among the libraries that could receive funding if the bond passes in June are Gilroy, Campbell and Los Altos.

“The new bond is a great way for the state to partner with local governments to provide new library buildings in under-served communities,” Supervisor Don Gage said.
