Gilroy – An 8th grade information night for students and parents will begin Wednesday, March 22, from 6 to 7:30pm at the Ascencion Solorsano Multi-Purpose Room. Also Thursday, March 30, from 6 to 7:30pm at the South Valley cafeteria and Wednesday, April 5, from 6 to 7:30pm at the Brownell Academy gymnasium.
Students will have the opportunity to register for classes at their respective school sites the day prior to the information night. However, parents will not necessarily be included in this process.

Auction to send musicians to Sister City in Portugal
Gilroy – Young violinists in Gilroy are hard at work preparing for a summer friendship tour with Mayor Al Pinheiro to Gilroy’s newest Sister City, Angra Do HeroÃsmo, Azores, Portugal.
To help raise money for the trip, the South Valley Suzuki Music Foundation (SVSMF) is holding ‘A Night In The Azores,’ a dinner and live auction Saturday, April 1, from 6 to 10pm at the IFDES Lodge, 250 Old Gilroy St.
Dinner and auction tickets are $25 per person. Auction items up for bid will include a ‘Monterey Getaway’ package, a VIP wine-tasting tour, an Oregon resort package and more.
All the proceeds will benefit the SVSMF Violin Kids Sister City Friendship Tour to Angra Do HeroÃsmo.

Storytelling in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday
Gilroy – Gilroy Premium Outlets and The Children’s Place Outlet will be hosting Once Upon a Saturday – Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! storytelling event Saturday, from 1 to 3pm.
Bring children or grandchildren to enjoy some of the Dr. Seuss classics such as: Oh, the Places You’ll Go!; A Hatful of Seuss; If I Ran the Zoo, and more. Birthday cake will be served to all children and attendees may enter to win prizes including Dr. Seuss books donated by Book Warehouse, The Cat in The Hat movie courtesy of Music for A Song and two admission tickets to the Dr. Seuss exhibit featured at the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.

Become a Bonfante Gardens volunteer
Gilroy – Would you like to become a docent/volunteer in a beautiful garden setting? Do you enjoy working with people and working outdoors? The docent group at Bonfante Gardens is full of energy, fun and dedicated people. Previous horticulture experience of any sort is a bonus, but definitely not a requirement.

Gavilan cheerleading tryouts begin April 3
Gilroy – Gavilan College Cheerleading squad is holding tryouts for the 2006-2007 year. Men and women experienced or inexperienced are welcome and must attend all three dates: Monday April 3, from 5 to 7pm, Wednesday April 5, from 4 to 6pm and Friday April 7, from 4 to 7:30pm at the Gavilan College Adaptive Gym 101, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
