Gilroy – The Gavilan Rams men’s basketball team has won three out of four games, including last week’s 50-44 victory over Napa Valley, to close out the preseason, giving them momentum as they head into tough Coast Conference South play against Cabrillo on Wednesday night. The Rams improved their record to 4-14 overall.

“We have some momentum and are right where we want to be,” said Gavilan coach Chris Shoemaker. “We have been playing better defense and rebounding better which is important because we play in one of the toughest conferences.”

Sophomore guard Adrian Zamora, who was selected to the first team all-conference last season, recorded a double-double and led the Rams with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots in the win. Ron Colmon and Django Evans each added 10 points for Gavilan.

Zamora has been a huge factor in the Rams’ success, averaging 17 points per game and in his last 10 games he has been averaging 20 points. Sophomore point guard Brock Sondgroth is the emotional leader for Gavilan, getting the Rams pumped up.

Colmon has been key at the guard position, hitting crucial 3-pointers for Gavilan late in games, while forward Antwoine Lax has been contributing 10 to 11 points per game and doing a good job on the boards.

The Rams will need to keep up their stellar play on Wednesday at 7pm when they host a very tough Cabrillo Seahawks team to kick off conference play. The Seahawks have posted a 7-9 overall record.

“Cabrillo is extremely disciplined and really big,” said Shoemaker. “Defense and rebounding will be keys for us. Cabrillo has one of the state’s best defense, so we will also need to be efficient on offense.”

Gavilan’s schedule doesn’t get any easier as the season progresses. After facing Cabrillo the Rams head to West Valley to go up against a West Valley College team that is ranked No. 2 in the state and is the favorite to win the Coast Conference South.
