“Hi Red Phone. I have a child who has attended Gilroy schools since kindergarten and my child will soon be in high school. I’m hesitant about placing her in Gilroy High School because of the all the horror stories I’ve heard. I’d like to know how the principal and administrators are combating gang activity on campus, drugs, bullying and disruption in the classroom as a whole. I’ve heard that in some classes, the teachers are afraid of the students and as a result pretty much let the students run the show. How can I as a parent be assured that everything that can be done will be done to ensure a safe, top-notch learning environment for not only my child, but for all children to attend Gilroy High School?”
Red Phone:
When asked, Principal Jim Maxwell said parents should have no reason to fear sending their children to Gilroy High School. He pointed out that GHS is equipped with on-campus security cameras that are monitored throughout the day and there are security guards patrolling the school.
Maxwell said gang activity on campus is rare and fights that occur are usually between friends or acquaintances.
“The reality is the fights are pretty darn infrequent,” he said.
Insufficient answer
“In your Jan. 4 response about the inquiry on what’s in it for the subscribers based on the advertisements you run, there was a nice, lengthy answer. Unfortunately, I ask the same question: What’s in it for subscribers that people who get it off the newsstand don’t get? You didn’t say one thing that pointed to subscribers only. Why is that? Enlighten my earlobes, please, please.”
– “Hi, you had a question asked about what special programs are open only to subscribers in your Wednesday paper and the answers you gave are available to everybody, not just subscribers. I’m curious if you could answer the question as it was asked, especially since subscribers only get at most a 15 percent discount on a 1-year subscription and working down to less than 10 percent on a 3-month or 6-month subscription, unless you’re a new subscriber. Thank you very much.”

It humbly apologizes for disappointing its readers. Unfortunately, Red Phone isn’t all-knowing and gets its information from other sources. All it does is decipher the jargon and then pass along the information to you readers. It once again touched base with Circulation Director Walt Glines and let him know a couple Red Phone readers wanted more than his previous response.
Glines said that plans are in the works for a Winter Special renewal offer for existing subscribers who sign up for the EZ Pay plan with credit cards. For existing subscribers who want to join the EZ Pay plan, the current deal is 14 percent off the regular price – plus the customer gets their choice of a $25 gift card for Nob Hill Foods or Chevron. Glines described the present offer as a great deal and invites subscribers to call 842-2327 and sign up for the EZ Pay plan.
“We will continue to offer introductory offers to new readers,” he said. “We’re confident that our top-notch package of local news, sports and features – plus advertisements of merchants throughout the community – will convince those readers there is great value in their local newspaper and that will continue with us once the introductory period is over.”
More notice needed
“Hi, I think it’s a shame about Monday’s school and for Gilroy Unified to lose all that money. But we need to notify a lot more ahead of time more than we did and incentive would be to give extra points to the students who attend, towards their grade. Not raise them a grade, but give them a few extra points. That might be some incentive to attend school. Take care. Bye.”

Interesting idea, caller. Though it knows it’s not necessarily the case, Red Phone thinks simply learning and achieving should be enough.
