”
I just have a great compliment for the downtown. So many people
have been ragging on it because it is pretty much the destruction
zone lately, but last Wednesday we went to a great showing of
‘Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein,’ we were sitting out under
the stars, watched a motion picture in Gourmet Alley, brought our
own chairs and had all-you-can eat popcorn.
Downtown Movie Fun
“I just have a great compliment for the downtown. So many people have been ragging on it because it is pretty much the destruction zone lately, but last Wednesday we went to a great showing of ‘Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein,’ we were sitting out under the stars, watched a motion picture in Gourmet Alley, brought our own chairs and had all-you-can eat popcorn.
“It was the funnest thing I have done in a long time and I just want to compliment the people who did it. I did ask who it was, it was the Downtown Business Association who teamed up with the City of Gilroy, and my best compliments. They tell me every Wednesday is movie night, so bring a friend and pass the word.”
Red Phone:
Glad to hear your compliment good caller. Red Phone will pass the word that Downtown Movie Nights will be held at 7pm every Wednesday night through Sept. 20. Bring a chair and enjoy “Disorderly Orderly” with Jerry Lewis served with complimentary popcorn this Wednesday under the Gilroy night sky.
watch for stops
“Hi guys, the stop sign on northbound Wren at Welburn is pretty much obscured by bushes. With school starting, that is something we all need to keep our eyes open on. If you have the ability to contact the city people so they can clear that up, that would be great. School’s starting and there’s going to be a lot of kids going through there in a couple weeks. Let’s keep our eyes open. Thanks.”
Red Phone:
Thank you caller for bringing attention to this. Red Phone has contacted City of Gilroy Operations to let them know about the hazardous stop. If you don’t see it cleaned up soon, please let Red Phone know as well as any other obstructions that need to be taken care of.
clarification for
red phone readers:
Stephen L. Brinkman, Assistant Superintendent of the Gilroy Unified School District, contacted Red Phone regarding Saturday’s column about fire hydrants used by contratctors.
Brinkman said a water meter is attached to the hydrant at the new school being built on Greenfield at the end of Luchessa.
“It is a rather large apparatus, at least 14 inches long and 6 inches in diameter,” Brinkman wrote in an e-mail. “It is attached to the hydrant with a large silver chain and lock so it can’t be removed.”
According to Brinkman, not only does the contractor pay high rates for water but there is also a hefty permit fee to use the fire hydrant as well.
Red Phone does want to clarify that the answer it gave callers regarding water use by contractors and fire hydrants wasn’t specifically aimed toward the school district’s contractor, but rather at letting readers know the answer to a very legitimate question: Do contractors using city water have to pay for it and how is that metered? Furthermore, Red Phone provided residents with the phone number for city engineering. It’s 876-0450. If you have a question on water use, by all means ask it. The Red Phone and city engineering are here to help.
