Gilroy 8/9 American takes third place in District 39
tournament
The Gilroy 8-/9-year-old American All-Stars weren’t quite ready for Salsipuedes Wednesday night.
The last-standing Gilroy Little League All-Star team was stopped by the Watsonville team 14-2, finishing All-Star play in third place.
“We were certainly out-coached and their team was very sharp,” said Gilroy manager Vic Vanni. “They overmatched us.”
Gilroy scored both of its runs in the early innings, but couldn’t hang with Salsipuedes’ powerful bats as the game wore on. Gilroy’s runs were driven in by Phillip Castro (2-for-2, RBI) and Jonathan Holiday (1-for-2, triple, RBI).
Gilroy’s pitching staff compiled four strikeouts. Nathan Bonsell had two and Jaeshawn Hoenick had a pair in one inning’s worth of work.
