The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:
CHEERS: For Zenichiro Uchida, who was awarded Japan’s highest civilian honor for his role in helping hundreds of Japanese immigrant war refugees settle in the United States, and for his efforts to foster good relations between our two countries. A former lieutenant in the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII, Mr. Uchida fought against the country he would later love deeply and call home. Mr. Uchida, a Gilroy resident and businessman, died March 29. He was told of the honor before his death.
JEERS: To the inconsistency in City Council decisions (stalling Cannery redevelopment because streets are too narrow vs. the Kern Avenue project, which was approved with the same-size streets). Why do we have rules and standards if we don’t follow them? Exceeding the city’s growth cap, Bonfante Gardens exceptions and chronic Eagle Ridge patrol debate are good examples of why exceptions ought to be as rare as hen’s teeth.
CHEERS: To dedication and resiliency of Mt. Madonna Yard Supervisor Pete Garcia, who has worked at the continuation high school since 1999. The 78-year-old veteran diagnosed with cancer refuses to quit and continues to battle, garnering respect from Principal Sergio Montenengro. “He provides students with a reason to change and believes in them to the point where they begin to believe in themselves.”
JEERS: To the cruel idiots who think cockfighting is a sport. Six men were arrested at a barn in unincorporated western Morgan Hill last weekend. Two dead roosters were found in the raid, the second at the property since April 8, when about 10 men fled before police could arrest them. Let’s rid South County of this heinous activity.
CHEERS: To the Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” campaign to increase seat belt use. It’s such a simple act to save your life, it’s hard to understand why some people still refuse to buckle up.
JEERS: To the ongoing problems at Velladao Mobile Home Park, where state officials say operators of the park have “taken little action to correct” health and safety hazards cited last month after a major sewage outbreak.
CHEERS: To Rhoda Bress for her award from the South County Collaborative Nutrition and Health committee. It’s well deserved for her leadership on establishing GUSD’s Wellness Plan, which is one of the most comprehensive and specific – as well as completed – in the county.
