Earth Day Festival Saturday

Gilroy – An Earth Day festival featuring tree planting, food and a number of activities for families will take place from 10am to 2-m Saturday at Christmas Hill Park.

The event will include birdhouse building demonstrations and live animals. Anyone interested in carting off free compost or wood chips should bring a shovel and container.

Garlic Festival pageant

Gilroy – Eight young ladies will compete for the Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen title during the 28th annual Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant beginning at7pm Saturday, the Gavilan College Theater.

Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant is a scholarship pageant. Contestants are judged on personal interview, speech, talent, and evening gown.

Tickets for the pageant will be available at the festival office, 7473 Monterey St. or at the theater that night. The ticket price is $10.

Author will be signing book

Gilroy – Murray Oxman, author of “How to Easily Handle Difficult People Handbook” is holding two local book signings. Oxman is the author of six books about peace: making peace with oneself, one’s family, neighbors, coworkers – everyone.

Oxman is the director of SWS books, a nonprofit all-volunteer publishing organization in Corvallis, Ore., committed to helping people conquer anxiety and depression. Oxman dedicates his time to helping people learn about simple ways to get rid of stress – without medication, drugs or any kind of treatment, just self-help.

The book signings and discussion will be held at 2pm Saturday at BookSmart in Morgan Hill and Sunday at the Gilroy Barnes & Noble.

Leadership Gilroy luncheon

Gilroy – A panel luncheon at Chips N Salsa Thursday, May 4, from noon to 1:30pm titled Growth, the Good, the Bad, the Reality.

Audition for ‘Temple of Boom II’

Gilroy – John Bisceglie is looking for energetic performers, ages 6 to 25, to be a part of his large scale summer musical extravaganza, “Totally Rockin’ Temple of BOOM! II” performing in August.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, May 7 at Dutchman’s Pizza, 6940 Chestnut St. Ages 6 to 10 at 1pm and ages 11 to 25 at 2:30pm.

Sheriff’s office in ‘Pat’s Run’

San Jose – At least 50 Santa Clara County Sheriff’s office personnel and their family members have formed “Pat’s Posse” and will participate in “Pat’s Run” Sunday.

Pat’s Run is a 4.2-mile run/walk dedicated to the memory of former Arizona Cardinal professional football player Pat Tillman and every other veteran who was killed during a combat conflict.

Tillman turned down a multimillion dollar contract and joined the Army in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The event starts at 8am at Leland High School in Almaden Valley. Funds raised will directly benefit the “Tillman Scholars” a scholarship program at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz., where Tillman attended.

Measure A project meeting

Milpitas – The VTA Project Priority and Revenue Advisory Committee will meet over the next two months to review and prioritize the 2000 Measure A project list plus a program of local streets, county expressways, bicycle and pedestrian path improvements, and other transportation projects.

The next meeting will be held at 5:30pm today at the Milpitas City Council Chambers, 455 E. Calaveras Blvd., Milpitas.
