Dear Editor,

It is no surprise that the Gilroy Unified School District Board refused to reconsider their decision regarding the Gilroy High School cheerleading squad performing at the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii. It would mean admitting they made a mistake. They don’t seem to have the capacity to do that.

This decision shows that they cannot see the forest for the trees. The life experience of participating in tradition-bound, special events far outweighs three days of classroom time. I know because my daughter participated in such an event at her high school. The positive change in her self-confidence and outlook on her future was evident upon her return, and I see it now every day.

To the parents of these kids, I suggest you band together to send them to the event in spite of the GUSD board. One of you can take the lead from the team advisor to organize the details. After all, you are paying the bill, not GUSD. Take your kids out of school on vacation and demand that the school give you the necessary work for them to maintain their grades. This is done all the time when families go on vacation during the school year.

To the GUSD board members who were so shortsighted on this issue, my wife and I will not be voting for you.

Phil Johnson, Gilroy
