DEAR EDITOR:
I read with interest the article “Study: more GUSD teachers under qualified” by Lori Stuenkel in the Dec. 8 edition of The Dispatch. I strongly agree with the main point of the article – that all students should have the benefit of being taught by a fully qualified teacher. The commission has worked diligently with state officials and other state agencies toward achieving that goal.
I would like to make one correction to the article. In the discussion of Professor Futernick’s ranking system and of the vetoed bill to establish a statewide index (AB 833, Steinberg, 2001) the article stated that, “Education officials have supported the index, including the California Federation of Teachers and the California Commission for Teaching Credentialing.”
I would like to note that officially, the Commission took a “watch” position on AB 833. Because the index concerned employment issues rather than teacher preparation, the bill did not fall within the Commission’s scope of work or statutory purview. A “watch” position allowed the Commission to follow this interesting measure without stepping outside of their prescribed jurisdiction.
Thank you for allowing me to set the record straight.
