Mustang kickers hold off Independence, 3-2, in Homestead

SAN JOSE – Three first-half goals by the Gilroy High boys soccer team were enough for a second straight victory in opening pool play of the Homestead Christmas Cup as the Mustangs held off Independence, 3-2.

Gilroy – which has yet to be defeated with six wins and two ties – followed up last weekend’s 1-0 win over Sequoia in the Cup with Saturday’s one-goal nod in game-two. Up next, the Mustangs will take on Monte Vista High in their final game of pool play Saturday at Evergreen Valley College.

Midfielder Ben Alcantar opened the scoring for Gilroy off a feed from teammate Jose Espina – who netted the second goal on a unassisted play. The third Mustang strike in the first half came off the boot of Luis Becerra – who finished off a feed from senior Jorge Plata.

Gilroy will play two home games this week on Tuesday against Andrew Hill and Thursday against Seaside. Both are scheduled to start at 5:30 inside Mustang Stadium.
