Dear Editor:

Once again, sadly, I see the signs outside the pet stores “Christmas Puppies For Sale.” I’m sure you all have seen them, too. If you have read Dr. Pete Keesling’s Dispatch column or discussed this issue with your personal veterinarian, you know their recommendation is to wait until after the holidays to purchase your puppies or kittens. Christmas can be a very stressful time. With all the preparations, families, noise, lights, etc., this is sure to be a stressful time as well for a new puppy or kitten.

Instead, put a card under the tree with pictures of the animal you may purchase, or better yet with a promise to take the recipient out to pick their own little pet. Please don’t bring these little ones home for Christmas.

One last word, in September I wrote a letter to the editor with regard to purchasing puppies from pet stores. This is a very serious issue. The puppy you purchase from the pet store is just as expensive as a puppy you will buy from a breeder. With a breeder pup, you know exactly what you are getting.

Merry Christmas to all.
