Dear Editor:
My how I like to see my name in print (except in the obituary column). Bill C. Jones mentions me eight times in his letter and Denise Apuzzo in her column about the same. Sure boosts my ego. I’m delighted to be a “tortured conservative,” or even an “overtly hateful and racist Christian.” My greatest fault is that I am capable of discerning between the bad and the good, between the good and the better and the better and the best that puts me at odds with Bill Jones.
Let’s get back to that all-white prom that sure upset Bill O’Riley and apparently Bill Jones.
Our Forefathers incorporated within the Declaration of Independence the following statement “We hold these beliefs to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” “Pursuit of Happiness” is a broad and all inclusive statement. It is not unreasonable to interpret that to mean freedom of association. That is the Right to choose your friends, associates and dance partners in an all-white prom, free of government coercion.
Bill O’Riley and Bill Jones are thought police. Think as they think, do as they say or they will label you a bigot, an extremist or even a racist Christian.
Now about that misinterpretation of Galations chapter three verse eight by SAINT JONES. Let’s look at it in context: Jones would have you believe, the Apostle Paul was preaching for the equality of all men.
For a quick review: the Jews were God’s chosen people at the time of Abraham. They were chosen to reveal God’s will to all people. The Jews had a priestly hierarchy, a High Priest and a Temple. The Jews were to offer a sacrifice, a shedding of blood, usually an unblemished lamb done by the Priest in the Temple for the atonement of sins. The priests had the franchise for sacrifices and atonement.
Then along came Jesus Christ who shed his own blood and sacrificed himself, by passing the priesthood for our sake. A large number of Jews of the time refused to accept Christ as their redeemer; preferring the orthodoxy of their religion. After all they were the chosen people – no need for Christ.
Paul in Galations let it be known that salvation through Christ was for all people – not the Jews exclusively, but for the Greeks, the Gentiles, the Romans et al. Paul did not preach equality for all men, but salvation through Christ for all that accept him. True we are all equal in the sight of God, but when God blinks or turns his gaze elsewhere, inequality of men develops at an accelerating pace and soon few are equal. When all men are equal, no man is free (prison), when all men are free none are equal.
Finally, to succeed in this life it is wise to learn discrimination. Learn to shun the bad and the evil. Seek the good, again discriminating among the good, the better and the best. Then embrace the best and success will be yours and the Apostle Paul will be proud of you. Tally Ho!
