Tools stolen from construction site
Gilroy – Construction on a multi-purpose room at El Roble Elementary School was slowed this week, after a stash of tools worth more than $10,000 was stolen over the weekend.
Police said thieves entered the construction site at 930 Third St. between 3:30pm Friday, and 10:30am Saturday, and entered a construction storage container containing tools being used for the construction of a multi-purpose room on the campus, a project being handled by Kent Construction of Gilroy.
Among the stolen items were air compressors, nail guns, saws, drills, and various other power tools.
“I don’t believe it’s going to effect the final completion of the project. We’ve lost a day or so of production because they don’t have all of their tools, but they’re replacing those tools right away,” said Gary Corlett, construction manager for Gilroy Unified School District, who oversees El Roble. “It’s a shame that somebody didn’t see something, so we can catch these guys.”
SCVWD slashes review unit
San Jose – The loss of property tax revenue is making it harder for the Santa Clara Valley Water District to enforce permit requirements for property owners wishing to build or develop within 50 feet of streams.
In response to losing $51 million in tax revenue to the state over two years, the district slashed 90 vacant positions from its budget. Four of those were from Community Projects Review Unit. The unit is still logging and filing complaints about non-permitted projects but is not following through with enforcement.
CEO Stan Williams said that even with a full staff of 17 the unit had a difficult time enforcing the permit requirement, and an effort two years ago to expand the district’s control of riparian corridors to 150 feet was met with passionate criticism.
