GILROY – The Gilroy Premium Outlets and the Gilroy Police Department bring you Halloween Spooktacular on Friday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. Come enjoy a safe and fun Halloween at the Outlets. Kids can learn Halloween safety tips from the Gilroy Police Department. Free trick-or-treat bags and free candy will be given out by participating stores. First 1,500 kids can receive free glow-in-the-dark necklaces from Erik’s Deli Marketplace (near In & Out Burger).

Real ghost hunt

GILROY – The Gilroy Historical Society will be investigating old St. Mary Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 10 a.m., beginning in front of St. Joseph’s Family Center, 7950 Church St. Explore old St. Mary Cemetery, final resting place of John Gilroy and many area pioneers, accompanied by Mary Garza of the International Ghost Hunters Association. Garza will attempt “readings” at some of the graves. No charge, but reservations are preferred. RSVP or find details at:

Apply for rotary grants

GILROY – The Rotary Club of Gilroy is currently accepting applications for community grants. The club has allocated approximately $20,000 to grant to local community agencies this year.

Grant applicants should:

• emphasize education and/or youth, with local focus in Gilroy,

• be an organization, not a person,

• have a broad-based impact, and a specific use for the money needs to be designated.

The Rotary Club of Gilroy has distributed more than $110,000 in community grants over the past six years. Applications can be obtained from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, 7471 Monterey Road, or by calling Scott van Keulen at 842-5272 or Jay Baksa at 846-0202. An e-form is available. Artist shares his journey

GILROY – Gavilan College Art Gallery presents “Francisco Franco: Educational Travels” through Oct. 31.

The exhibition chronicles the journey of an artist from California’s Central Valley, to Modesto Junior College, to the University of California, Berkeley, to the New York Academy of Art … and beyond. Works from each era are included to allow the viewer to experience the struggles and triumphs of a creative journey.

The Gavilan College Art Gallery is located in the Library building on the Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s closed Saturday and Sunday. Be a 2004 ‘star’

GILROY – Paramount’s Great America in Santa Clara and Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park in Gilroy will hold open auditions in the Entertainment department for the 2004 season. Open to applicants ages 15 years and older. Both theme parks are looking for enthusiastic applicants to fill a variety of seasonal entertainment positions including show characters, singers, dancers and comedians. There are also plenty of opportunities to work off-stage or behind the scenes as stage managers, technicians, escorts and theater attendants. Auditions and interviews for the 2004 season will be held at both Paramount’s Great America and Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park. All applicants who audition will automatically be considered for open positions at both parks and could be selected to work at either park. Auditions are:

• Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1 and 2 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at Paramount’s Great America, Santa Clara, in the Paramount Theatre. Auditions for singers, actors, comedians and variety artists begins at 9 a.m. Dancers, characters/escorts, theatre attendants and technicians’ auditions begin at noon.

• Sunday, Nov. 9 at Bonfante Gardens Family Theme Park, Gilroy, in the Bonfante Gardens Gymnasium. Auditions at 9 a.m. are for singers, actors, comedians and variety artists. Auditions at noon are for dancers, characters/escorts, theatre attendants and technicians.

MORGAN HILL – The Morgan Hill Downtown Association presents: “Seventh Annual Safe Trick or Treat” on Friday, Oct. 31, from 5 to 7 p.m., on Monterey Road, between First and Third Streets. Furry friends fair

MORGAN HILL – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) are hosting a pet adoption fair on Saturday, Nov. 1 and Sunday, Nov. 2, at Petco, corner of Tennant and Monterey, from noon to 5 p.m. Over 250 animal companions are in need of a permanent home.
