Lady Mustang tennis team takes every set in 7-0 road win over
Hollister to improve to 2-0
GILROY – Two straight wins to open their Tri-County Athletic League schedule and the Lady Mustang tennis team is already writing its own headlines. After their latest 7-0 sweep of host Hollister, the Gilroy players thought, ‘Mustangs spice it up with sweet stuff,’ would be fitting.

“They played pretty good. I’ve seen them play better,” said head coach Jennifer Yoder, whose squad is 2-0 in league. “The girls didn’t think they played that well, but they played well enough to win.”

And win convincingly.

The Lady Mustangs did not drop a single set against the younger Lady Haybalers and added two exhibition wins to their final tally.

“Salinas, they were more competition than the Haybalers. But their No. 1 and 2 singles gave my girls a good run,” Yoder said. “This comes off experience. We have tons of returners. The whole team is returners.”

With eight seniors in Thursday’s 10-player starting line-up, Gilroy proved to be too much for Hollister – as senior No. 1 Valerie Huang banged out a 6-2, 6-1 victory and senior No. 2 Catherine Wilson notched a 6-0, 6-1 triumph. The singles sweep continued with senior No. 3 Mindy Marquez’s 6-0, 6-0 nod and senior Megan Leuchars’ 6-0, 6-4 win.

“They’ve been playing the same girls they’ve played against for the last three years,” Yoder said. “I think they’ve improved a lot. There are a lot of great players in our league.”

The top Lady Mustang duo of seniors Amy Thomas and Alicia Shurley cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 decision, while the No. 2 tandem of senior Jackie Morales and junior Anna Ngyun strolled to a 6-2, 6-3 victory. In the No. 3 doubles spot, senior Katie Bloomquist and junior Tasha LoPorto picked up the seventh and final ‘W’.

Up next, the Lady Mustangs will play host to Notre Dame on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

“They’re a tennis school. Gilroy is going to be a tennis school. Live Oak and Gilroy in the next five or six years will be tennis schools.”
