Buy a pie and eat it, too

GILROY – Gilroy High School Grad Night 2004 is sponsoring a Gidzich pie fund raiser. The sale runs through Wednesday, Oct. 22. Flavors are apple, ollieberry and pumpkin. Cost is $11 to $12.50 per pie. Contact a senior at GHS. Pie delivery date is Nov. 7.

Place your bets on Rams

GILROY – The Gavilan College Athletic Department invites the community to a night of casino fun on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, 2951 Club Drive.

The evening kicks off with cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., with casino playing beginning at 7 p.m. The proceeds will benefit the Gavilan College Rams student athletes. Tickets are $70 per person or $120 for couples. Details: Ken Berry at 846-4936.

Bands take the field

GILROY – Gilroy High School Marching Band and Color Guard invite the public to the 11th annual GHS Marching Band and Color Guard Competition on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Mustang Stadium.

This music and dance extravaganza features 12 bands from all over Central and Northern California. Proceeds from the competition will be used to support Gilroy High School band programs, including transportation and maintenance and repair of instruments and uniforms.

Concession stands featuring pepper steak sandwiches, loaded with garlic and grilled vegetables, will be available for your convenience.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children. Competition begins promptly at 6 p.m. after the presentation of colors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the singing of the National Anthem by GHS choir members. Details: 847-4629.

Dress up your pet

GILROY – Do you have a devilish dog? Or a frightening feline? Maybe a heavenly hamster? If any of your pets match these descriptions or they just like to dress up in silly costumes, you may want to take them into PETCO, 8767 San Ysidro Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon for the Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Contest.

All contestants will receive a Howl-o-ween goody bag filled with free surprises, and one lucky winner at each store will receive a $25 PETCO gift card. Additionally, all contestants will be entered in a grand prize drawing for a year’s supply of Science Diet Advanced Protection dog or cat food. Pet parents are encouraged to dress up as well, to add to the Howl-o-ween excitement.

Kids can enter PETCO’s coloring contest. Each store winner receives a $5 PETCO gift card. Coloring sheets can be picked up at PETCO, and they are due back in the store Saturday, Oct. 25. Details:

Nominate a favorite teacher

GILROY – The Economic Development Cooperation is pleased to announce its upcoming seventh annual “Educator of the Year” award. The award is designed to recognize an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution within the educational community of Gilroy. Any person who has been involved with the public/private educational arena for at least one year is eligible.

The award will go to the individual who has demonstrated exceptional motivational skills with measurable results, demonstrated innovation in program development and implementation and has received recognition and respect of peers and/or student body.

The recipient of the award will be honored and receive $1,000 during the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Citizen Awards Dinner on Feb. 7 at San Juan Oaks Country Club in Hollister.

Nomination forms are available at Gilroy schools, the Gilroy EDC office, 7471 Monterey St., or by calling 847-7611. All nominations must be received by Nov. 7.

Guard against the flu

SAN JOSE – The Santa Clara County Public Health Department is encouraging those at high risk for complications from influenza to be vaccinated early. Flu season is just around the corner and vaccinations can help protect against getting or carrying the flu to others.

If your own physician is not providing flu vaccinations, Santa Clara County residents can receive a flu vaccination from the Public Health Department Immunization Program clinic sites and also at various senior centers throughout the county after Oct. 14. The cost for a flu shot is only $8.

The Public Health Department Immunization Program Clinic will be at 80 Highland Avenue, San Martin, on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Those of high risk include: Adults 60 years or older, anyone with chronic/long-term health problem such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer, kidney disease and HIV/AIDS, women who will be in their second or third trimester, infants 6 to 23 months, residents of nursing or long-term care facilities.

Those who can transmit the disease to those of high risk should also consider getting flu vaccination, including healthcare workers and household contacts of members of at risk groups. For more clinic sites and hours of operation, call

Spaghetti feed

San Martin – The San Martin Lions Club will host its fifth annual Spaghetti Feed and Raffle on Friday, Oct. 24. Dinner will be served from 6 to 8 p.m. Adults are $6 and children 6 and under are $3.
