Gilroy – They’re facing Westmoor. No, they’re facing Leland.
Whoever it is the Gilroy boys’ soccer team faces in the first round of the Central Coast Section playoffs today, they’ll be ready.
“We can take any team right now,” said senior midfielder Alfonso Motagalvan at practice Monday.
For the record, “any team” is indeed San Jose’s Leland, though when Saturday’s CCS playoff seeding meeting ended, the Mustangs thought they’d drawn Westmoor of Daly City.
That was before Alisal recalculated its points Sunday, the brackets were redrawn and Gilroy drew the No. 9 seed and a trip to Leland today at 2:30pm.
The good news is that the ‘Stangs faced the Chargers twice last season – and beat them twice, including a 4-2 win in the CCS quarterfinals. The bad news is that Gilroy would next face CCS No. 1 seed, nationally-ranked Watsonville if they get past Leland.
Or maybe not so bad.
“I’m feeling confident,” said Motagalvan. “Bring anybody on. We’re the Cinderella team.”
