GHS boys tennis team takes out Chieftains, 5-2.
SALINAS – The Gilroy High boys tennis team won its third straight Tri-County Athletic League match with Tuesday’s 5-2 road romp of Palma.
Senior Robbie Marques recovered from a 2-6 first-set loss to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 for the nod over Palma’s Mark Grosnick in the top singles match-up. While senior No. 2 man Mark Heisy faltered in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, to John Campbell, senior No. 3 Jacob Pniewski cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 straight-sets victory over Patrick Finn and No. 4 Mark Hsieh rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over John Geiger.
In doubles action, the top tandem of Tomas Carrillo and Ray Rivera earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Palma’s Thomas Mueller and Thomas Merrill; the No. 2 duo of P.J. Jamal and Anthony Christian scored a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Nathan Ayala and Aluizan Khan; and the No. 3 pair of Ryan McBrearty and Chris Adams fell in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, to Palma’s Abbas Anable and Patrick Courane.
The Mustangs (3-1 in T-CAL, 3-2 overall) will play host Thursday to neighboring rival Live Oak with tennis action beginning at 3:30 p.m. on the Gilroy High courts.
