Gilroy’s New Hope Community Church (8886 Muraoka Drive) announces a special Bible Study course open to all women in the South County. It will be held on 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings, beginning Feb. 9 from 7pm to 8:30pm.
“Believing God” was developed by the noted Christian author Beth Moore, currently on the staff of Houston’s First Baptist Church.
At the age of 18, Moore felt a call to full-time ministry. For years she attempted to serve God through singing and playing the piano, but was unsuccessful.
Then she decided she was meant to serve as a foreign missionary, “but nothing happened.”
Finally, she discovered that her gift is speaking, teaching and writing. Since then, she has found fulfillment in her true calling, “Bible literacy,” guiding believers to love and live God’s word.
During the weekly sessions, participating women will watch a DVD prepared by Moore, discuss it in small groups, and pray for each other. Coffee and light refreshments are provided, and childcare can be arranged if needed.
The only cost to participants is $20 for a workbook which accompanies the DVD. Each session has a listener’s guide to enhance what is learned by filling in blanks and outlines.
There will be five days of “homework” following each weekly class. Moore cautions students: “Don’t let the word homework conjure up a negative connotation. Our homework will not be the kind we used to complain we’d never use in real life. Nothing could be more useful, practical and thrilling than learning how to believe God in our daily lives.”
Homework will include these elements:
n “Today’s Treasure,” a focal Scripture for the day
n A Scripture study written especially for this course
n “It’s Your Turn,” each woman’s personal study of Scripture
n “Faith Journal” to document what God is saying to each one individually
n “Godstop,” a feature to record God at work in daily life.
“Participants will learn to recognize God in their midst by noticing visible prints of His invisible hands.” This course will help students “grow more aware of God and learn to take more notice of His actions.”
Kathy MacPhail, wife of New Hope’s Senior Pastor, the Reverend Malcolm MacPhail, and facilitator of Believing God, calls this course “a way to elevate the spiritual level of our community.” Women will “gain some tools to dive deeper into Scripture.”
Mrs. MacPhail expects to also offer this course on another day for people who can’t attend Wednesday nights. To register call (408) 842-4857.
