I have to agree with the latest owners of Station 55 that the downtown area is considered dangerous. I lived in Gilroy from 1973 until 2002. I saw the downtown area go from thriving business area to that of nothing. It is a shame to see business people invest a lot of money and effort that goes only to failure.
After J.C. Penney and Wells Fargo Bank pulled out, Gilroy Hardware and Gilroy Appliance closed doors, there wasn’t much to draw people into the downtown area.
Some effort should be made to close down the old bars and card clubs, and make the people who hang around the doorways and the streets move on. This is what has made that area undesirable for more than 15 years. It is almost like that area has become the slum of Gilroy.
P.S. – I read The Dispatch via the Internet since I moved go Gilbert, AZ last year.
