students.
Our summer vacation is just about over now which gets me thinking about all the things that summer does for us high school students. Summer has a certain feeling to it that you can’t describe but it does something to us. It gives us a chance to have new experiences with people that we normally wouldn’t meet at school.
Summer vacation is a time that comes at the end of every school year. It is what all of us students at Gilroy High, and most likely every other school, look forward to all year. We can’t wait to get out of school and start our summer jobs, go on vacations, and just have fun. During the school year we are with most of the same people that we see every day and that we have been friends with forever. With this situation, sometimes we don’t get the chance to meet many new people. Summer gives us the chance.
Summer jobs have a lot of benefits. Not only do they give you the opportunity to earn money so you don’t have to be dependent on your parents, it also gives us the satisfaction of having financial freedom and meeting new and different people in the process. I work at Bonfante Gardens and have been working there for the past three summers. The first summer that it opened many students from Gilroy High worked there and many others wanted to. Some people told me that they didn’t want to work there because “everyone worked there” but that’s exactly why I wanted to work there.
When you work somewhere where other teenagers work it helps you to meet new people your same age. Since working at Bonfante Gardens I have made so many new friends. I have met people from Gilroy High that I didn’t even know went there, and I don’t think that I would have met them any other way. At school sometimes people can be scared to meet different people.
You have to interact with people at work, so you get to know them and maybe you even find out that they really aren’t that bad, or they aren’t really the way you thought they would be. You find out how well you get along with them and now you’ve made a new friend.
Summer vacations can give you the chance to make new friends also. This summer I went on a vacation to Florida with my family and we stayed at a very nice resort in Orlando. The second night we were there I met many new people. By the third or fourth night my brothers and I had met so many new people from all over the country and the world. We all hung out every night in a big group and one night as we were all sitting there I just stopped and looked around and realized I am sitting around a table with people from New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, England, and Ecuador. I just thought that was the most amazing thing in the world.
There is no other way that I would have met all of these great people unless I was on vacation during summer break. Who knows, if we would have all gone to the same school we may not have ever know each other or even hung out. But, we did hang out for the week and it was because we were in a new environment and didn’t have our regular friends around.
Summer gives us a great opportunity to go out there and meet these people that we wouldn’t meet at school. As people say, people go in and out of our lives and some leave footprints on our hearts and those are the ones that we remember forever. The people we meet that are different from Gilroy High people, the summer vacation people, are the ones that leave footprints on our hearts and are the ones that we never forget because they give us different experiences to carry on with us for the rest of our lives.
