Back-to-school shopping spree
GILROY – If you want to help children and like to shop, contact The Salvation Army Santa Clara County office and be a volunteer shopping chaperone at the 12th Annual Back-to-School Shopping Spree. Business plan basics
GILROY – Good planning is the basis of any successful business start-up, and a necessity for a loan application. This workshop will help participants focus on a marketing plan, financial projections and strategic planning to put the new business on the road to success.
The “Writing Your Business Plan” workshop will be held on Aug. 18 from 5:45 to 9 p.m. at the Gavilan College Small Business Development Center’s new office at 8351 Church St., Building E.

Training for CPAs and attorneys
GILROY – Roberta Jones, an Edward Jones investment representative in Gilroy, will host a course entitled “Entity Selection for Small-Business Owners” on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. at her office at 7877 Wren Ave., Suite A, in Gilroy. This program, broadcast via Edward Jones’ satellite system, will be produced by the firm’s Professional Education Network exclusively for area CPAs and attorneys.
Course topics include: entity formation issues, including admission of new equity investors to an existing business; payroll tax and income issues related to payments to owners; tax-efficient income distributions to owners of small businesses; and exit strategies and entity selection issues. This program is eligible for three CPE hours for CPAs and accountants, as well as three CLE hours for attorneys licensed in California. The enrollment fee is $50, which includes admission for one person and all course materials. Lunch will be served. Reservations are required.

Rebekah Children Services expands

Tennis tourney
GILROY – Gilroy Tennis Club will host a mixed doubles tournament Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. The club welcomes people who are new to town or new to tennis to come join in the fun at the tennis courts at Las Animas Park. MORGAN HILL – The Chamber of Commerce will host a free screening of “The Sandlot” at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center on Saturday, Sept. 6, at dusk.
The event will begin at 4 p.m. with a family funfest featuring dance, martial arts and gymnastics demonstrations. Food, microbrew beers and local wines will be available. Kids’ activities including a three-story slide, jump house and crafts will also be on hand.

Ohlone life tour
GILROY – Discover how the native Ohlone People lived and used the natural resources along Uvas Creek for their everyday needs.
