Dear Editor:
In your “Our Voice” column in The Dispatch on Monday, June 23, your Editorial Board besmirches the efforts of Californians who are participating in the recall effort targeting the worst governor in California, if not U.S., history. For you to characterize this as a vast right-wing effort by the Republican Party is either out of ignorance or by design.
The recall effort, which was born shortly after the re-election of Gray Davis, is a collaborative effort by more than just Republicans. In fact, a recall effort by only Republicans would have zero chance of success in a state where they are outnumbered substantially by Democrats, who are flush with big bucks from the labor unions in who’s pockets Davis and the other Democrats reside. When I started working on the recall effort six months ago, it was sorely under-funded and disorganized. At the kick-off rally on the west steps of the Capitol in Sacramento, the Libertarian Party became the first to endorse the recall. That same day, across the street at the California Republican Party convention, delegates unanimously endorsed the recall. Shortly thereafter, Peter Camejo of the Green Party also endorsed the recall.
The Dispatch complains about the cost of a special election being too high at $25 to $35 million dollars. Considering the fact that the Democrats, who dominate the legislature and hold all statewide constitutional offices, overspend to the tune of about $1 billion dollars a month, and that California is also experiencing the largest job and business exodus in decades, it seems reasonable to spend what it takes to send a message to the politicians in Sacramento that enough is enough!
My largest client is moving out of state in July in order cut costs by $12.5 million a year. Think about how many billions our state is losing this year alone from businesses that have had enough! To make matters worse, the Democrats have come up with a plethora of creative tax increases to solve the budget crunch, such as tripling the price you pay to register your car. Workman’s Compensation Insurance is another example of the dismal failure of the Davis administration. Companies, who can no longer afford the outrageous cost of Workman’s Comp, are being forced to lay off employees or leave the state entirely. In a recent survey, California was ranked 49th in best states in which to do business.
Instead of making the serious cuts required to close the $38 billion deficit, Davis and his cronies try to float tax increases by wooing some Republicans to cross the “NO NEW TAX” line drawn in the sand by Republican State Senator Jim Brulte. In the past, a few Republican’s have caved. Not this time. It is time for the Democrats in California to learn how to balance their budget and firing their boss is great way to get the message across.
On Saturday, June 21, a small group of Gilroyan’s (not just Republican’s) set up shop in front of several businesses with permission and collected over 300 signatures in just two hours. I had people apologizing to me that they had voted for Davis and now the wanted to, “Throw the bum out”. This is a grass roots effort that has caught fire thanks, in part, to a generous donation by Southern California Congressman Darrell “Viper” Issa but also from donations by thousands of small business owners like myself as well as ordinary citizens.
It takes money to promote anything. The Democrats get millions from the labor unions because the Gray Davis does their bidding. Whatever Issa’s ambitions may be, I appreciate him stepping up to the plate with his checkbook. Frankly, the tremor’s this movement has caused in Sacramento is well worth the cost and the effort.
