GILROY – Gilroy’s Historic Strand Theater Hosts national and Local Talent the weekend of Gilroy’s Famous Garlic Festival

The Gilroy Garlic Festival runs each day from July 25 to July 27. Food, merchandise and entertainment are the main attractions at the event, but there is often little to do in the evenings once the festivities wrap up around 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds. The Strand has filled the community’s need for fun at night by hosting outstanding entertainment each evening.

Today: Suave featuring Jorge Santana

Several of the members of local favorite Suave also play with recording artists Mystique. Their distinctive brand of Latin jazz/rock is popular throughout the South Bay and Santa Cruz areas.

Jorge Santana, brother of multi-platinum recording artist Carlos Santana and himself a former member of the band Santana, joins Suave at 9 p.m. for one night only at The Strand. Santana is a major talent with more than 20 years of touring and recording experience. Tickets for the show are $25.

Saturday: The Austin Lounge Lizards followed by The Cowlicks

Saturday features both national and local favorites. The Austin Lounge Lizards have a wide national following after 20 years and eight albums including their most recent, “Never An Adult Moment.” They bring their tongue-in-cheek brand of hilarious country/bluegrass satire to Gilroy for a very special evening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 at the door.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, The Lizards have “mingled impeccable, countrified musicianship with wickedly funny original material.” Following the Lizards show, local favorites The Cowlicks will take the stage.

Dancing, and more fun are encouraged during sets from this funny, talented “alt-country California style” band. Featured last weekend on Watsonville’s KPIG with their recently released self-titled cd, this is an up-and-coming band not to miss.

Sunday: Juz-Cuz

Another rising talent: Gilroy’s own Juz-Cuz. Funk, dance, and R&B sounds abound from this group – even though they are all under 20.

Much of the music they love and play was written before they were born, but Juz-Cuz embraces funk and embodies dance with their large, infectious sound. The show starts at 7 p.m. and is free.
