– On Saturday, April 26, a diverse group of men in this
community will literally walk a mile in a pair of women’s shoes
through Gilroy in order to figuratively protest violence against
women.

GILROY – On Saturday, April 26, a diverse group of men in this community will literally walk a mile in a pair of women’s shoes through Gilroy in order to figuratively protest violence against women. The walk will begin at the Community Solutions office, 6980 Chestnut St. and will end at Christmas Hill Park. A Health and Safety Fair will immediately follow the event in the park. Proceeds will benefit Community Solution’s South County Rape Crisis Program. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the march will begin at noon. Men are encouraged, but not required, to walk in women’s shoes and participants are asked to collect at least $100 in sponsorship. Community Solutions provides a free

Scrub a mutt
GILROY – There will be a dog wash, craft sale and bake sale at Scrubb a Mutt on Sunday, April 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Join “Girls for a Change” for a day of washing the dog and helping our area animal shelters. Scrubb a Mutt is located at 591 First St. The cost is $10 per dog. Details: 778-0546.
Explore Miller Estate ruins
GILROY – Explore the historic Miller Estate ruins with a park ranger and learn about the rich cultural history of Mt. Madonna County Park on Saturday, April 26. Meet at the Park Office/Visitor Center at 9 a.m. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for an easy walk from the park office to the Miller ruins. The walk is appropriate for all ages and abilities. Spring fun at Rebekah’s
GILROY – The public is welcome to enjoy some old-fashioned fun for the whole family at Rebekah Children’s Services 39th annual Spring Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 25, 26 and 27. There will be carnival rides, mouth-watering food and dessert booths, games, craft vendors, entertainment, classic car/hot rod shows and more. Local mascots, including McGruff the crime fighting dog, Der Weinersnitzl dog and the Hometown Buffet bee, will attend to entertain the crowd. All proceeds benefit services for vulnerable children and families. The festival will take place at Rebekah Children’s Services’ grounds in downtown Gilroy and South Valley Junior High. Enjoy a family night out
GILROY – Come to the Wheeler Community Center on Saturday, April 26, for a night of fun with your family. Play games, do arts and crafts, sing karaoke, get out your energy in the jumphouse and enjoy refreshments. The fee is $25 for a family of four and $5 for each additional member. Serra Club hosts Don Gage
GILROY – St. Catherine’s Catholic Church Serra Club will host Super-visor Don Gage, who has been active in Santa Clara County political activities for 20 years, on Saturday, April 26, at 9 a.m. Gage will speak on the conflicts that arise between the practice of his faith and the demand of secular political life. Fest to showcase fine wines
CASA DE FRUTA – The Artisan and Wine Festival will be held on Saturday, April 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Casa de Fruta. Over 15 wineries, labeled as artisan wineries for providing quality, handcrafted vineyard designated bottles, will pour throughout the afternoon as they visit with guests. The festival will also showcase some of the finest restaurants, artists and musicians in the region. The Shane Dwight Blues Brothers will play on the main stage. Tickets are $40 per person and include a logo glass, 10 wine tasting tickets and the day’s events. Tickets are $35 for each designated driver. Gourmet food will be sold separately. Help fund children’s library
GILROY – Plant-lovers and gardeners of all ages are invited to buy low cost plants for their spring gardens at a plant sale at the Gavilan College Student Center campus on Monday, April 28, starting at 9 a.m. The sale has been organized by the members of Gavilan College Classified School Employees Association to benefit the Gavilan College Child Development Center, with the creation of a children’s book lending library. Over 400 plants were donated by Sakata Seeds for the sale, including geraniums, snapdragons and more. The community is invited to donate gently used children’s books, especially for preschoolers. Operation Yellow Ribbon
GILROY – Operation Yellow Ribbon is holding a fund-raising event at Chevys Mexican restaurant on Monday, April 28, to raise money to send care packages and letters to soldiers stationed overseas. There are still many troops stationed overseas that look forward to receiving comfort items from home. Enjoy a great meal and show support for the troops. Guns of the old west
GILROY – There will be a meeting of the Masons on Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m. The Masons of Gilroy are hosting an event to share the history and values of guns of the Old West and provide information on their origins and evolution. Anyone interested in history can come to the meeting at 8387 Wren Ave. and learn more about the old-time guns. There will be peace officers at the door to make sure there are no unlawful weapons or that someone has forgotten to unload one and all attending are urged to tag their guns carefully to be sure everyone goes home with the right stuff. GILROY – Gavilan College presents Career Day, a free annual information fair open to the public, on Wednesday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Gavilan College Student Center. More than 45 organizations and businesses will provide information on occupations and careers to students and community members. Exhibitors representing such diverse fields as cosmetology, health, business, engineering, law enforcement, retail, community services and others will be on hand to explain different career options and the training and education required for each. SAN MARTIN – The San Martin Shelter currently has many cats that do not wish to be pets. These independent cats are beautiful and healthy.
