Dear Editor:
To Dispatch staff writer Eric Leins: the East Bay AFL-CIO’s anointed drone for Gilroy mayor is Guadalupe Arellano. The use of her nickname, Lupe, implies she’s really just a good ol’ gal The Dispatch embraces in true family style. Is that correct? Your article (Paperwork in, fines still unpaid – Sept. 8) does make her devious plan clearer.
She finally, after two years, files the required paperwork on past campaigns. Having watched her through the years it’s obvious why she’s seeking to become mayor: were she to win, her first official act would be to give herself a full pardon for anything/everything.
Ahhh, the subtlety of it all!
On another point: in the military, it’s called damage control. In Washington D.C., it’s called spin direction. But Rose Barry’s Sept. 8 “letter” continues what her past comments concerning Gilroy First! have been: a classic shuck-and-jive (Shuck – “something of little value” Jive – “glib, deceptive or foolish talk”).
She claims Gilroy First! is “… an issues committee dedicated to asking candidates pointed questions …” Pointed questions, Ms. Barry? Isn’t the slant of your group nothing more than continual harassment of non-union WalMart, with your “pointed questions” nothing more than demands for conformity to this goal?
You claim your group “… does not take sides nor endorse specific candidates …” but “… some of our members put their concern into action by running for council/mayor …” Your group will support those union-drone members, of course, so when you speak to others or distribute your literature, you’ll be endorsing those members. Don’t be hypocritical, Ms. Barry. Gilroy voters have far more awareness than you give them credit for.
You ask the community to “… support us with donation toward … brochure projects …” but you’ve already indicated, via Eric Leins’ Sept. 5 story, your “brochure project” will be slanted with the group’s self-serving “mission” and emphasized with member/candidate promotion.
By the way, Ms. Barry: Leins raised some specific points in his Sept. 5 article your choose not to respond to, including: 1) “Some candidates … say the brochure amounts to nothing less than soft money to its member candidates …” 2) “… there is likely to be a strong correlation between Gilroy First! candidate answers and Gilroy First! goals … an indirect endorsement.” 3) Why the specific question on “big box retail in Gilroy” when there’ve been no concerns when other unionized “big box retail” has come to Gilroy?
Gilroy First!, by its actions and words, does not put Gilroy first. It seems to exist to promote its pro-union member/candidates through an ever-increasing shuck-and-jive at the expense of Gilroy’s citizens/voters. Ohh, yes: as an active political-action group soliciting funds for its “projects,” has Gilroy First! registered with the state as required?
