One of the most famous tales of trickery is found in a story of classical literature that takes place in the ancient city of Troy during the Trojan Wars. That story of course involves the Trojan Horse, and the now familiar warning “beware of Greeks bringing gifts.”
Actually, this “beware” warning is supposed to be the words of a man named Laocoon, who was a priest in Troy during the Trojan Wars. Refreshing the story’s plot, the Greek army was at a standstill in its effort to breach the walls of Troy. After repeated failure on the part of the Greeks, a clever plan was devised to trick the Trojans. The Trojans discovered a great wooden horse left outside their gates by the fleeing Greek army. Laocoon however, warned the city leaders against bringing it into the city, remarking, “I am wary of Greeks even when they are bringing gifts.”
Of course, the story recalls how the Trojans disregarded his advice and opened the city gates to welcome the horse.
The Trojans then decided to celebrate and by nightfall the whole city was in a drunken uproar. Hours later the alcohol had taken its toll. Then, while everyone was fast asleep, Greeks hidden inside the horse unsealed the belly and climbed out. Silently, they moved quickly and killed the Trojan sentries at all the city gates. The gates were then opened to the Greek army.
The foolish Trojans were estroyed – betrayed by something they thought was a well-earned prize. Of course, they were fatally wrong. And thus the legend of the Trojan Horse entered into the chronicles of historical legend.
Speaking of the Trojan Horse, I’m reminded how the concept is still used in politics today, even in Gilroy and California for example. Let’s start with Gilroy. I’ll venture to say that Gilroy First! has shown itself to be a Trojan Horse for the citizens of Gilroy. Fortunately however, the contents of this horse were revealed before it was “accepted” wholeheartedly into the city. And sure enough, found inside was what certainly appears to be a “Greek” agenda of pro-unionism. Hardly an innocent “prize” that wanted to appear neutral!
But there’s also an application in the forthcoming California gubernatorial recall election. For my illustration, I’ll compare Troy of old to today’s California Republican Party. And I’ll compare candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Trojan Horse. Over the last number of years, the “Greek” Democrats have besieged the California Republican Party. Even though the Democrats control the governorship and have the majority vote in the state Legislature and Senate, the state is in a financial mess. And the Democrats have nobody to blame but themselves for this mess. I won’t repeat the reasons why Gray Davis should be recalled, but it appears that the majority of California voters from both major parties are still persuaded that Gray Davis must go.
Enter “The Terminator” to offer political hope for the Republicans. The only trouble is that just like the Trojan Horse was full of surprises for the citizens of Troy, I’m afraid that The Terminator is going to be full of similar surprises for the Republicans of “Troy” if he ‘s elected by the voters of California to replace Davis.
In fact, some of the “Greeks” inside the horse have already “peeked-out”, revealing Schwarzenegger’s position on gun control, abortion, homosexual rights, and the probability of raising taxes if the state’s budget deficit worsens and credit ratings continue to drop.
That doesn’t sound much different than the “Greek” Democrats outside the city.
In addition, the Terminator is married to a political “Greek” – Maria Shriver, whom the Los Angeles Times said “has often functioned as a de facto personal manager” for her husband.”
As one of the ubiquitous Kennedy cousins, it’s no secret the potential First Lady of California is a lifelong liberal Democrat. In fact, can anyone honestly think that a liberal Democrat like Maria Shriver won’t have any political influence on her own husband, even if he calls himself a Republican?
Sure – dream on.
So Republicans of Troy, wake-up! Don’t be as dumb as the ancient Trojans. Schwarzenegger is a “Trojan Horse.” Keep this horse out of Troy. Your political integrity may well be at stake if this horse becomes the next governor of California. Tom McClintock for governor.
