U12 girls elite squad wins second straight in 5-0 home
thrashing
GILROY – A five-goal explosion from the Orchard Valley Tornadoes Saturday morning resulted in a 5-0 victory over the visiting DeAnza Freedom.
The Tornadoes got on the board early as Amanda Kline split a pair of defenders and fed fellow forward Taylor Johnson, who beat the goalie for the first goal of the game.
The Tornadoes never looked back as JC Clayton made a long lead pass through the defense and Johnson again cashed it for her second goal. Sarah Block closed out the scoring in the first half, digging a ball away from the defenders and beating the goalie with a nice left foot shot to make it 3-0 Tornadoes.
The Tornado midfield dominated the game as Amanda Whitling, JC Clayton, Bella Comin, Sarah Block, Clarissa Hammer, Lexi MacPhail, and Alex Seda kept the play in the Tornadoes’ end throughout the game.
If the Freedom did crack the first line of defense, the Tornadoes’ defenders, led by Stephanie Wan, Cloey LemMon, Lindsay Pund, and Mary Thatcher were quick to thwart any plans the Freedom may have had of scoring. Although goalie Nichole Downing handled the ball several times, she was never seriously threatened.
In the second half, Coach Bob Whitling was able to shuffle positions, and Amanda Whitling relieved Nichole Downing in goal. Downing made the most of her opportunity to play in the field, first scoring off a nice lead pass from Bella Comin to push the lead to 4-0, and again with a left footer to make it 5-0 and close out the scoring. Meanwhile, Whitling held up her end of the bargain with a nice leaping save off a corner play by the Freedom to maintain the shutout.
The Tornadoes, 2-0 in league play, travel to San Jose next week to take on the Rascals.
