The Gilroy Fire Department, South Santa Clara County Fire District and Santa Clara County Fire Department responded to a call about a garage fire at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday on 420 Broadway St.

GFD Battalion Chief Phil King said firefighters were able to contain the fire at about 20 minutes after firefighters arrived at the scene.

King said the fire caused about $20,000 in damage to a carport next to an apartment complex. The GFD said the blaze was caused by a debris pile in the carport.

King said when firefighters got to the scene, flames were coming from inside the carport. Firefighters turned off utilities to the carport and condemned the structure.

No one was injured and pets were accounted for.

King said the cause of the fire is unknown, and firefighters are investigating.
