Two young men severely injured a homeless man by beating him on the head with a stick and strangling him.

About 3:03 p.m. Friday, police received a report that two men had beaten a 41-year-old transient on the 7800 block of Monterey Street. Police reported the men had used a stick to beat the transient and strangled him using their hands at the same time.

The victim, the name of whom police did not release, sustained major injuries, including bruising and head trauma, and was taken to an unspecified Santa Clara County hospital for treatment. Police were not aware of his condition Monday afternoon.

On Thursday, one of the assailants, known only to the victim as Israel, approached the victim near a homeless encampment along the railroad tracks and tried to steal some of his personal property, Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said. He would not specify what type of property Israel tried to take. The two men got into a fist fight, but police were not notified until the next day, after the more severe beating.

Israel was described as a Hispanic adult male, about 5 feet, 3 inches, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is homeless, has a shaved head, and wore a black jacket and black jeans. Police also said he rode a dark bicycle.

The other alleged assailant was described as a Hispanic male adult, about 5-feet tall, with longer brown hair and brown eyes. He is known simply as David. He has a light complexion and was wearing dark clothing, Gallacinao said.

Anyone with information about this incident can call police at 846-0350.
