THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:
Should the Gilroy police force people in the homeless encampment known as ‘Bamboo Village’ located on private property on the banks of Uvas Creek off that land?
Yes: 9 No: 3
â– Yes. It’s not a safe environment for the homeless or the surrounding residents especially the most venerable such as women and children using the Uvas Levee trail and Village Green residents.
â– Who are they hurting? It is better that they are there than having to watch them live downtown in doorways and begging in the middle of the intersections. That needs to be stopped immediately. Leave the tent dwellers alone unless they are breaking the bamboo rules!
â– A really tough question. We don’t have a 24/7 center yet; some of the folks don’t want to be indoors; there’s no good place to roust them off to. Yet, it is clearly trespassing. I hope that St. Joseph
Family Center and the other agencies can help and house most of the folks.
â– Yes. But match that with services and solutions. Moving the homeless to the ‘next creek’ isn’t the answer either.
â– YES! It would be fantastic to be able to offer alternatives but this encampment needs to be cleared.
â– Why? If it’s private property, who can tell them what to do with it? However, the bigger question is, how can Gilroy help the homeless who are there?
â– Yes if the property owners have filed proper notice to have the trespassers vacated from the land.
â– Unfortunately it is private land. There could also be other health issues at the camp. A social service agency should go out there and let them know what alternatives there are for homeless people.
â– YES. If law is to have any effect, then legal “NO Trespassing” signs must be enforced.
