Do you like counting backwards? Try this: Gilroy High sent five wrestlers to this year’s State Finals in Bakersfield, placed four of them and graduate none of the above.
Led by 135-pounder Armando Gonzalez, a junior this past year and the son of head coach Armando Gonzalez, the ‘Stang state qualifiers also included sophomore Nico Naranjo (fourth, 103 lbs.), junior Adin Dueñas (seventh, 130 lbs.), freshman Hunter Collins (eighth, 160 lbs. and the youngest ever placer at the State Finals) and sophomore Austin Gubrud.
While Gubrud didn’t place in Bakersfield, the 140-pounder pulled off a rare double with trips to the CCS finals in both wrestling and swimming.
Gonzalez and Collins travel to the Ukraine later this month to train for two weeks with that country’s national team coaches. All part of the plan to improve a wrestling squad that placed a Gilroy High-record sixth in state last season.
Other top teams: The GHS football team beat Palma for the first time in school history and made the CCS Large School semifinals; the girls’ basketball squad also made it to the section semis in the Division I bracket.
