MORGAN HILL – The GHS boys tennis team is off to a 2-0 start after knocking off Live Oak 5-2 on Friday in non-league action in Morgan Hill.
The Mustangs split the four singles matches with the Acorns.
No. 1-singles player Vinh Vong won in straight sets over Derek Johnson 6-3, 7-5, and Oliver Drewry picked up a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, beating Ryan Campbell 6-4, 6-2.
Ryan Azad at No. 3 singles and Victor Vong at No. 4 each dropped their matches in three-set tiebreakers.
The Mustangs’ doubles swept all three matches.
No. 1-pair Joseph Leong and Kevin Lee came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The No. 2-doubles tandem of Andrew Costa and Brandon Sumida cruised to a straight-sets triumph 6-1, 6-0, and Tevin Voorhees and Alex Medina picked up a point for the Mustangs with their 6-3, 6-4 win.
Shorthanded, GHS boys volleyball goes 1-4 at weekend tourney
Heading into the Aptos Spring Fling tournament over the weekend, the GHS boys volleyball team looked in mid-season form in two Tri-County Athletic League victories over San Benito last Tuesday and Seaside on Thursday – each win coming in straight-sets fashion.
However, the Mustangs hit a bit of a snag at the Spring Fling, losing four of five matches, thanks in large part to some surprise scheduling conflicts, head coach Scott Martin said.
“We lost half of our team at 1 o’clock,” he said.
As a result, the Mustangs were forced to play with just six members of their team, the minimum amount of players needed.
After splitting their first two matches of the tournament, a 2-0 loss to Archbishop Mitty and a 2-0 triumph over host Aptos, the Mustangs fate took a turn for the worse as fatigue began to set in.
“The six that stayed absolutely played their butts off,” Martin said. “I know they were tired. They definitely gained some respect out there. people that were there from other teams started to cheer for them.”
Despite the valiant efforts of Albert Chavez, Dietrich Baumgartner, Nico Sandoval, Gavin Menges, Pablo Chavez and JJ Lam, the Mustangs dropped the final three matches of the tournament.
GHS continues TCAL play tonight against Watsonville then returns home Thursday in a non-league showdown with Oak Grove.
