Three people were injured in a traffic collision when a tractor trailer attempted to make a U-turn on Monterey Road in San Martin, police said.
About 5:42 a.m. this morning, a 1991 Freightliner big rig was traveling north when the driver, Leandro Perez, 47 of Nipomo, attempted to make the U-turn just north of San Martin Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol officer Jaime Rios.
While the truck was negotiating the turn, a 2001 Hyundai traveling south on Monterey Road struck the truck, Rios said. Moments later, a third vehicle – a 2004 GMC – traveling north also crashed into the big rig.
The driver of the Hyundai, Lupe Bazon, 72, of Morgan Hill, suffered a broken arm, according to police. Bazon’s passenger, Stephen Grimm, 31, of Morgan Hill, suffered a collapsed lung.
Both occupants of the Hyundai were flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, Rios said.
Also injured was the driver of the GMC, Salvador Moreno, 57, of Morgan Hill, who was brought to San Jose Regional Hospital with a complaint of pain, Rios said.
Perez was uninjured in the crash and declined medical treatment, police said.
Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the collision. Police did not know why Perez attempted to make the U-turn across Monterey Road.
