A Morgan Hill man shot a round from a handgun into the ground in front of a downtown restaurant Saturday night, but no one was injured, police said.

Police responded to a call of a disturbance at Sinaloa’s restaurant, 17535 Monterey Road, about 9:34 p.m., according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer.

When officers arrived, they learned that a male suspect, later identified as Marco Alaniz-Chavez of Morgan Hill, was asked to leave the restaurant, Neumayer said.

Neumayer said Alaniz-Chavez was “very intoxicated” when he showed up at Sinaloa’s. When employees of the restaurant refused to serve him, he reacted angrily and they kicked him out.

As Alaniz-Chavez, 29, was leaving the restaurant he drew a handgun from his waist area and shot one round into the ground inside the restaurant near the front door, Neumayer said. He fled the scene on foot going north toward Main Avenue.

Police searched the area and found Alaniz-Chavez walking near the intersection of Main and Hale avenues, according to Neumayer. After searching his pockets they found a loaded .38-caliber handgun, ammunition and illegal drugs.

Alaniz-Chavez was arrested without incident and booked into county jail on suspicion of discharging a firearm in public, possession of a concealed firearm, possession of a controlled substance and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

No one was injured in the incident. Police did not say if any significant damage was done to the restaurant or any other public areas.

Anyone with more information about the incident may call Morgan Hill Police at (408) 779-2101, or the anonymous tip line at (408) 947-7867.
