With countless sights, sounds and flavors to savor every year at the Garlic Festival, the possibilities can be overwhelming. We want to be sure you don’t miss a thing, so we present you with our Top 5 picks of the day:
SIGHTS AND SOUNDS
The heat is on over at Gourmet Alley and the talented pyrochefs are sure to elicit oohs and aahs as their flame ups (just imagine orange barrels of fire shooting up in the air) reach new heights. Feel free to snap photos, but don’t distract them too much or you’ll be playing with fire.
SIGNATURE
Eight contestants from across the country will square off in the festival’s famous Cook-off Contest on the stage that bears the event’s name. From watermelon crab meat soup to roasted garlic blueberry and pear cobbler, the entries take “unique” to a whole new level. One thing’s for certain, each will be bursting with the robust flavor of Gilroy’s favorite herb.
YOUNG FUN
It’s not in the kids area but the Mobile Rock climbing gym and bouncy slide is the perfect place for the little ones to work off their sugar high. Just be sure to keep it a secret from your tykes until you are ready, otherwise you’ll be pestered all festival long to go.
YUMMY FOR YOUR TUMMY
It’s not a garlic festival without trying a dollop of the garlic ice cream. Descriptions have ranged from “delicious” to “disgusting.” Faces have fluctuated from joy to that pained expression likening to the first time you tasted a lemon. Will it be brilliant or bleh? Which side are you on?
WALK ON THE WILD SIDE
Ever try alligator tail, Cajun crawfish, escargot? Do you even want to? Test your bravery and palate by hunting down some of the festival’s most exotic cuisine. Or at least witness someone else take the plunge while you safely stand by.
