The Santa Clara County Public Health Department will hold free H1N1 vaccination clinics in Gilroy and San Jose this weekend in an effort to reach more Latinos, according to a statement.
Nationally, Latinos have experienced nearly double the hospitalization rates for H1N1 as Whites – 30.7 per 100,000 people compared to 16.3 – and higher mortality rates than Whites, Asians, Pacific Islanders and blacks, according to a statement. While the flu activity is light at the moment, experts cannot predict whether and when another wave of influenza might arrive.
The vaccine is the best way to protect against H1N1, the department said.
The first vaccination event will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday during the Fruit and Veggie Cinco de Mayo celebration in the Arteaga’s Super Save parking lot, 6906 Chestnut St., in Gilroy.
The second vaccination event will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday during a Cinco de Mayo at Discovery Meadow in Guadalupe Park, near San Carlos Street and Woz Way in San Jose. The department will be at booths 39 A, B and C in youth area.
