THIS WEEK’S WEB POLL:

Closing the doors to the public for “Power Fridays” at City Hall so employees can get their work done without interference – good idea or lousy idea?

Lousy idea:10 Good idea: 2

â–  As long as the day was spent getting real work done it is a great idea! However, I know that you can enjoy conversations over coffee and power lunches that last twice as long as usual.

â–  Lousy. This is counter to the mission of PUBLIC employees: to serve the public. ‘Power Fridays’ will turn into employee boredom and computer game playing.

â–  Lousy. I did learn though that appointments can be made on those Fridays. n Lousy idea. Like teachers, they should take their work home and not get paid, but keep the offices open. n Bad idea. If staff needs quiet time to get work done, maybe they can be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on those Fridays and then use from 1 to 5 p.m. for catch-up.

â–  Good. For them. For those faced with time with the public and time to actually do what is expected for their jobs beyond the ‘clock time’ required of their jobs, bad.

â–  Horrible idea.

â–  Terrific idea! They could also reduce the work hours to, say 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a two-hour lunch, reduce stress and ensure everyone is well rested and focused. After all, public employees shouldn’t be burdened with the same customer service responsibilities as the private sector! Why don’t we get the police to bring coffee and donuts over to them on those tough-to-manage non-furlough days … on second thought, when have time or budget ever been ever been factors for customer public service? I hereby withdraw my previous suggestion for donuts!

â–  Bad Idea. From what I hear it is hard enough to get documents processed for the public during regular hours so eliminating a day will really be difficult. Even opening for a few hours on Friday’s would help the public get important task done.

â–  Good idea. I think it should be a temporary solution.
