GILROY—Gilroy had Santa Clara County’s third fastest population growth rate in 2014 and added new residents at the same pace as San Jose, according to a state report.
Outpacing the state and Santa Clara County, Gilroy grew by 1.4 percent, adding 736 residents for a January 1, 2015 total of 53,000 compared to 52,264 a year before, according to the annual state population report issued Tuesday by the California Department of Finance.
Milpitas grew by 3.9 percent for the period, or by 2,703 residents, making it the county’s fastest growing city.
At 1.7 percent, Morgan Hill tied with Mountain View for the second fastest growth rate among the county’s cities. It added 700 residents in 2014.
Gilroy tied with San Jose for the third highest rate of growth for the year. The county’s and Bay Area’s most populated city, San Jose added 14,205 residents for a January total of 1,016,479 and is the state’s third largest city after Los Angeles and San Diego.
Among the state’s ten largest cities, only San Diego’s 1.5 percent growth rate topped San Jose’s.
By contrast, California grew by 0.9 percent and Santa Clara County by 1.2 percent, or 358,000 and 21,600 residents, respectively.
