Adult basketball teams running even
GILROY – The Gilroy Community Services Department adult basketball program has ties atop each of its four leagues after regular season action finished last week.
The Men’s C and E Leagues, as well as the Women’s League, finished with two-team ties for the top spot in the second half of play. The Men’s D League has a three-way tie for first place.
Five tie-breaker games are scheduled, including three on Tuesday Feb. 17 at Solorsano Gymnasium. FFC and Gaeta’s Taqueria of the C League play at 7 p.m., the Sparks and Above the Rim in Women’s League play at 8 p.m., with Pizza N Stuff and Beale Properties at 9 p.m. in D play.
The Playaz and Pro Electric-Gavilan Honda-Rio Nilo play for the second-half E title at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Cordevalle meets the Pizza-Beale winner at 8 p.m.
The best 2-of-3 Championship Series will begin with one game this week, followed by second games and third games as needed next week.
Ed Gamboa scored 17 points Thursday as the Playaz shocked the Pro-Honda-Rio club 54-50 to leave both teams at 5-1. The winner of Wednesday’s encounter will play the Gilroy Young Plants for the championship trophy and t-shirts.
Daniel DeLeon logged 12 points, Al Rivera 10 for the Playaz. Tony Werner managed 16 points, Andres Espinosa 13 and Danny Rodriguez 10 for the losers.
Marco Lopez made four three-point field goals in a 22-point effort as the Sand Pit completed the season with a 60-56 nod over the Titans. Adolfo Mireles made 14 points, Edward Johnson 11 for the Sand Pit. Mike Vanni poured in 27 points for the Titans.
Beale Properties slipped into a tie for first place at 4-2 Thursday with a forfeit loss to Cordevalle. Beale held a 57-53 lead in the final minute before dropping to three players to cause a forfeit. Shawn Teacher scored 23 points, Mike McAvoy 13 for Beale, Mike Martinez 16, Brent Torres 14 for Cordevalle.
Miguel Gilliard scored 33 points, Jeff Powell 20 for Pizza N Stuff in a 73-60 win over Gilroy Young Plants. Robert Silvia popped in 15 points, Bill Haughney 14 and Keith Francis 10 for the Plants.
Above the Rim moved to 5-1 Wednesday with a 42-39 rally past Williams Dental Lab. Marta Salas made three 3-pointers in the final seven minutes and paced the Rim with 19 points. Maxine Chavez collected 12 points and Jenee Robertson hit two 3-pointers in an eight-point showing for Williams Dental Lab.
Shanah Keyes dropped in 14 points as the 5-1 Sparks topped R.J. Dyer Real Property Investments. Yesenia Flores and Lillian Silva each scored 10 Sparks points. Gretchen Yoder-Strock struck for 16 points for R.J. Dyer.
FFC joined Gaeta’s at 4-2 Tuesday with a 64-52 decision over Triple Threat. Neil Garrett led FFC with 19 points. Jacob Garcia collected 27 points, Sig Reynisson 12 for Triple Threat.
