GILROY – A homeless man told city police he was cooking his lunch on a barbecue grill in Las Animas Veterans Memorial Park when another homeless man stabbed him several times with a kitchen knife.

Police found both men at the corner of Hanna Street and Welburn Avenue – three blocks from the park – between 1 and 2 p.m. Wednesday. The victim, whose name was not released, was bleeding from his wounds and indicated that the other man, 44-year-old Jesus Ochoa, had stabbed him. Police arrested Ochoa and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon, a felony.

The victim had at least two or three stab wounds that were not life-threatening, paramedics reported to police. An ambulance took him to a hospital for treatment; information about his condition was not available as of press time.

Ochoa confessed to stabbing the man but did not say why, police said.

The victim told police he thinks Ochoa was drunk at the time. Police officers reportedly smelled alcohol on Ochoa, and they took a blood sample from him for a toxicology test.

Police found no weapon in Ochoa’s possession but, after searching the area, found a steak-type knife that matched the victim’s description. There was no blood on the knife, and as of press time police were still trying to find out if it was the weapon in question.

The victim told police he was acquainted with Ochoa before the stabbing. Both are Spanish speakers; neither speak English.
