Mustang kickers clinch league crown with 1-0 win over North
Salinas
SALINAS – The Gilroy High boys soccer team is still in search of the perfect game, but in the meantime, the undefeated garlic crew clinched their first ever T-CAL title with Thursday’s 1-0 victory over North Salinas.
“Right now, they’re definitely happy. They’ll maybe celebrate for a day or two, but they’re not satisifed just being T-CAL Champions,” Coach Armando Padilla said. “Our intentions this year as far as post-league play is to get past that first round. After getting the past first round, we have the potential to compete against any of the top teams in this section.”
Sophomore Ben Alcantar netted the lone goal off a feed from junior teammate Alfonso Motagalvan.
The Mustangs upped their league record to 8-0 and remained unbeaten at 17-0-4 overall.
“These kids deserve it,” Padilla said. “They’re going to go far. This is the year.”
The Mustangs have lost in the first round of the playoffs the last two seasons.
Gilroy, which is ranked No. 2 in CCS behind only Watsonville, still has two games remaining in league against Live Oak on Tuesday and a make-up game against Palma later in the week. Gilroy last won a share of the CCS title in 1991.
